I was hoping for something more. With the town needing to come together, old wounds will be exposed, truths will be revealed and relationships will be healed. No one shames or scolds Natalie for her pain, which I found refreshing. Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe takes you to the small town of Wicklow, Alabama, and this story is told in alternating points of view. It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother's estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father's side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can't stop talking about.

Not to say that the magical elements felt tacked on—on the contrary, they were the most compelling elements. The town abounds with a cast of quirky characters and the story surrounding the blackbirds, the messages and relationships in the town make for intriguing reading. I enjoyed the mystery/magical/dream/message parts of it.
