I tried turning it over using an 1 5/16" socket on the crank pulley but it won't budge. So it's difficult to guess what you are dealing with. You have to use the starter. I was thinking that the bottom end shared journals like a SBC. Maybe pull the plugs just to see if you can use the hand crank. Something is not right. I can turn the crank shaft up to a certain point and then it's as if she hits something and won't go further. Rebuilt 235 won't Start. When its installed in the bad position the bearing pinches the radius on the crank journal causing it to be hard to rotate. I've turned it overa few times by hand before it went on the stand andnever experienced this. Normally when it won't turn over, it is because the rings are rusted to the cylinder wall and even if you get it unstuck, then the rings are rust welded to the ring lands in the piston. Walk very carefully on this.
As the TDC mark on the block is very difficult to see when its in the engine bay. I bought some Sea Foam after hearing so much about it here on the list and used it in Kathleen's Outback yesterday. If after a single turn or two it gets easier, you'll know. The pistons are still sitting on the corner of a shop table to remind me to lube the lumps that are sitting around. Its not uncommon to need to crank the engine over by hand as you slowly tighten the engine down to help make slight clearancing. Rotate the crank assembly so the arrow is lined up at TDC on the crank. Towing it to limber it up is not a good idea. Rebuilt engine won't turn over by hand. The mains are fine but the connecting rod bearings are what seem to be the problem. Location: Australia/USA/EU/Soviet Russia. Tow starting will either fix it, or more likely, score and/or spin a bearing.
Your best bet is to remove one connecting rod cap at a time and inspect the bearing to see if it is maked with an oversize dimension. If you still have the crank box and bearing box, they should both be marked. The 6 volt had no problems. This is most commonly seen on old cars that are due for restoration. My question is that after i torque down the rod bolts the engine will not turn over at all. Speaking of Sea Foam... So, I'm off to pull the beast and get it on a stand. To check timing yoiu have to be at TDC of the compression stroke. Pulling the starter and doing the screw driver thing would work too. Small engine will not turn over. I did the whole loosening of the bearing caps and tried to rotate the engine over and it all turned easy. If the pistons were mixed up, you need to sort the as to left bank and right bank (look for the chamfered side of the rod bearing, when all of the piston dots face forward, you should have 3 chamfered bearings facing the rear, and 3 facing forward), and then start putting pairs together on the journals until each journal/rod pair has the proper side clearance.
