The whole thing is this: If you don't use just basic grammar, if you don't get the language down, you're not going to have access to a tool that people use as a weapon against you. This autobiographical work includes some of his poems, which are powerfully evocative. I think it did not help him in any way that he needed because he is still to this day in prison. You could see the narrowing of life's possibilities in the cold, challenging eyes of the homeboys in the detention center; you could see the numbing of their hearts in their swaggering postures. We all need a dose of that these days. It was just so heartbreaking to listen to a story of oppression and heartbreak that was only made tolerable by the triumphant ending and continuous amazement at his ability to capture his experiences with the written word.
