I mean, most queer SFF that I can think of either has happened somewhat recently or well before I was born, and here's a book out in the 90s that features not one or two but pretty much an entire cast of queer characters battling their way against conspiracies and in a fresh and fun future where the web can be experienced directly in the brain, where hacking is just as full of politics as SFF is now. I started another work by Ms. Scott, Shadow Man around the time I first started this book, and that story has much the same density effect. Scott is a bad friend on facebook. I think one of the most ringing endorsements one can give a book is that it made you immediately want to check out other works from that author, and the excellent character work here definitely means I'll be looking into the rest of Melissa Scott's bibliography.
Stiles, on the other hand, has fallen out of love with Lydia, and can't figure out just why that happened. It's a fucking good read and a 9/10 for me. The fact that we meet so many people for one scene, people whom Trouble and/or Cerise clearly know, just cements the fact that this world existed before the book began, which is something I personally like. The queering of the main characters - Trouble and all her friends - is the most obvious feature. The next morning, Scott and Stiles watched warily as Stilinski and his deputies arrested Derek and put him in the backseat of a cruiser, while Derek glared at them all the while. It has two protagonists who are different, with a clear friction between them. While yes, I do want to know more about the Hundred Years' Winter and the political situation in Asia, it makes sense that the characters in this book wouldn't necessarily bring those things up; they aren't directly related to the plot, and Scott, it seems to me, adds them in to give the world character, which I think works (although some of my friends aren't of the same opinion!
I enjoyed the sheer number of queer characters a lot, although it was a little jarring to have a world where they're clearly somewhat looked down on. After being awoken by Jordan Parrish, who had just found a catatonic Lydia in the woods, Scott learned about Sheriff's condition and rushed to the hospital to both comfort Stiles and inform him about Lydia's similarly precarious situation. As Trouble lives up to her name - she and her friends have an interesting and not entirely safe romp into an online and real-world futuristic adventure. He did return to the University of Notre Dame with football players, students, alums, friends, and family for a funeral mass presided over by Notre Dame President Rev. So that day turned into that night at Children's Hospital. Now, that said, the first chapter is super slow. I enjoyed this early 90s cyberpunk story despite a couple of flaws. Afterward, when Scott, Stiles, Lydia, and Malia all graduated from high school, Scott and Stiles reminded each other that they both loved and needed one another despite the fact that they were going to colleges on opposite sides of the country.
