Get yourself plastic brushes and nickel plated jags so you don't introduce copper (brass/bronze are made of copper) with your cleaning tools. I thought the bore was clean, as my patches were clean. WOW, you make things difficult on yourself as you described your cleaning regimen earlier in this thread, forget the ammonia and just try Bore Tech Eliminator. On my factory Remingtons, I clean every 30 or so rounds as I want exceptional accuracy of 3/8" or so, and some of the barrels are really a pig to deal with. I saw the Wipe-Out and thought I'd give it a try. Butch's bore shine vs hoppes #9 oil. I load hot and I want my rifle to throw that perfect first shot out of a totally clean barrel. Nylon brush or copper? Store in a quality ziploc. I asked him to leave the gun with me on the way by and pick it up on the way home. I'm a big fan of Ed's Red. The first shot was 1 1/2″ high and 1″ to the left. I have used all the "cleaners" (meaning bore cleaners, not lubes) mentioned so far, and have owned a Gradient Lens bore-scope for close to 20 years. Repeat the process at least 3 times. You need a copper solvent designed for gun cleaning. This rifle should really have some fouling in the bore. I did, head to head.
You should always clean them, bronze, or nylon will not touch steel, but if dirty they can certainly abrade it, e. g. at the crown. Small calibers are a different animal Al...... 22 rim fire target shooters never clean their they do they have to shoot them back in. The horizontal ( windage) alignment was right dead center on the "X " the official NRA military type target. Anybody recommend a good bore cleaning solvent. Were you trying to say that bigger bores need to be shot in like. Never compared it against Wipe Out but when I tried it right after it came out it was just too messy for me. Please note that I am sending this from a different email than I used on. Butch's didn't seem to remove copper fowling much at all. It's not as strong as Montana Extreme, granted, and maybe not quite as good as that Barnes stuff, but it's not as messy as Wipe Out and far better than Shooter's Choice and not as involved and time consuming as Sweet's. I have 10 different ones on the shelf and play with them frequently.
I did have an experience like yours with the BW. I try not to let it build up. Lots of opinions on cleaning products and methods out there, this is just my $. I'll add another vote for Wipe Out as being my current "go to" cleaner. This morning, the patch was totally clean. It seems as if it would be easier to apply in a larger-caliber barrel with a larger outside diameter.
However I was never able to eliminate the highly visible "tiger stripes" until I used this product. Who makes the best cotton patches? A 30cal will reach out and touch them. This info has been around for at least a couple decades, but too many rifle shooters base their opinion of the effectiveness of solvents on whether they can see copper streaks inside the muzzle. Those are indicators of excessive build-up. AR work: Bolt actions: Foreign Semi Autos: Barrel, sight and trigger work on most pistols and shotguns. Wipe out, sweets, KG12, or some other copper remover, alternated with a good carbon remover, alternated with a mechanical remover (JB paste, Rem bore cleaner, etc. Repeat that until there is no blue on the patches. The next tight fitting patch through the bore with Wipe Out makes it look like one of the old style blue ink fountain pen cartridge exploded in my bore, as the blue copper residue pours out the muzzle. Montana Xtreme Copper Killer is one. Wet bronze brush with Hoppes #9 and pass through bore ten times. Instead of scrubbing, I watch a little TV, read awhile, take care of errands or chores, then return to my rifle later. Just don't want the surface rust to turn into pitting so I clean and oil them regularly. Will hoppes 9 hurt gun finishes. FYI though, I only got about 50 cleanings out of a can. From: Reed McGregor. When I took Dan's suggestion and cleaned 'just enough', the barrel would go 50 rounds before needing any attention at all. Works great, but it has an ammonia smell to it and it's very easy to waste the stuff. Anyways I cleaned it 2 more times with the wipe out and after the 3 rd cleaning it was spotless with no copper or carbon fouling.
THIS +1, my hunting rifles maybe every 3 - 4 years i don`t shoot them that much. 4 grains on my powder scale. It worked but took a couple overnight applications. Went to Shooter's Choice and liked it a bit better. Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET.
