I have been a long time fan of the Charles Lenox mystery series. Along these lines, The Last Passenger has the heaviest weight to pull and does so impressively. There's a hysterical disjointedness to his entries that we recognize — and I don't mean hysterical as in funny but as in high-strung, like a plucked violin string, as the months wear on.

Asked to help investigate by a bumbling Yard inspector who's come to rely on his perspicacity, Lenox quickly deduces some facts about the murderer and the dead man's origins, which make the case assume a much greater significance than the gang-related murder it was originally figured as. In terms of Lenox's ongoing character arc, it's the strongest of the three books. You know I love a good mystery, especially when the detective's personal life unfolds alongside the solving of his or her cases. They are thoughtful, well-plotted, enjoyable tales, with a winning main character and plots intricate enough to keep me guessing. Events of the past year and a half were stupefying and horrific — but we suffered them together. And the third book, The Fleet Street Murders, provides a fascinating glimpse into local elections of the era, as Lenox campaigns frantically for a parliamentary seat in a remote northern town. I am not enjoying the pandemic, but I did enjoy Finch's articulate take on life in the midst of it.
