A few weeks ago, the 54-year-old Ms. Meyers was rushing from editing room to scoring stage on the Sony lot, putting the final touches on the the film, which she considers her most personal yet. As longing turns into love, the two must figure out how to deal with their feelings and thoughts about what they should be doing in their lives, all while Erica must simultaneously deal with Julian falling for her. The 69-year-old actress notably bared all in the 2003 film "Something's Gotta Give, " starring both Peet and Jack Nicholson. Meyers' script might as well be nonexistent--allowing Keaton and Nicholson to improv would work better than some of the more obviously staged bits, such as a near-endless montage of crying scenes that's supposed to play as the height of hilarity but in fact makes you fumble for some imagined remote control that might possibly have a mute button. In one scene he wears an offensively oversized green and yellow polo shirt the likes of which we have not seen since, I don't know, Aeropostale. One curious aspect of Nicholson's character, Harry Sanborn, is that he's supposed to be the CEO of a hip-hop label called Drive-By Records. I remember just seeing them all stand up naked and going, "Wow. I don't think they'd spoken to each other in 20 years, and I immediately thought, 'I'm right. ' But I'm not going to answer that question, because that would hurt somebody's feelings. "Something's Gotta Give" looks to be more of the same, but with a difference. People who are funny charm me, and I'm always the idiot. "It wasn't a problem, in that regard. 2 F-words, 2 sexual references, 3 scatological terms, 2 anatomical terms, 8 mild obscenities, 1 religious profanity, 19 religious exclamations. Even if those over-the-hill lovers have the star power of Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, ''Something's Gotta Give, '' Ms. Meyers' $75 million romantic comedy about the Viagra set, which opened on Friday, is a commercial risk: middle-aged romance generally translates into box-office detumescence. Continuity mistake: When Erica and Harry are walking on the beach you can see a shadow behind them several times. Erica rails and sobs over her abandonment (thankfully, Keaton actually makes all the sobbing comedic) then therapeutically pours her heartbreak into a her new play, but except for the twist of killing off Harry, Meyer makes no transition from reality to fiction, leaving her world famous playwright looking like nothing more than a kiss and teller. Keaton's last "sex scene" came opposite Steve Martin in the second "Father of the Bride" movie (1995), and it was so brief and chaste that it happened in a fade-out and ended with her silk blouse entirely unmussed. You know this because he's introduced in a very Sex and the City scene that features a bunch of hot, thin women entering NYC clubs, all set to the 1999 banger "Butterfly" by Crazy Town. Perhaps he's just relieved that no one's jerking him around on wires or jamming power cords into the back of his head anymore, but his relaxed performance here ranks among his very best, and that's a short list. Of course, Jack is being Jack - his concession to character is to rein in his eyebrow waggling - but he does manage to put across the impression of a changed man. You looked great, by the way.
You're insane, number one. Jack Nicholson stars as a successful business man whose sexual relationships with younger women allow him to avoid becoming emotionally entangled. Some of the rockier times of his years in office had to do with his devotion to Mrs. Clark's quiet pragmatism; his gentle presentation wasn't welcome in a commander in chief. For his part, Mr. Nicholson says that since Sept. 11, he has found himself drawn only to work that will make people laugh.
ELLEN DEGENERES: Soup or salad? One hates to put words in anyone else's mouth, but it's hard to draw any other conclusions. I really enjoy seeing. Yet he consistently delivered on the beliefs he voiced (one example: appointing a record number of women and minorities to high-ranking governmental jobs and judicial posts).
