There is more than an element of Stephen King in Ms Tudor's storytelling, but that is not a bad thing; the basic plot reminds me a lot of 'Pet Semetary' - but I suppose that book was based on some scary folk legend in the first place – and of course authors have always drawn on classic stories for their inspiration. Two days later she turned up again but she wasn't the same. Joe Thorne is returning to his hometown of Arnhill.
Nothing is as it seems and the twists come thick and fast as the novel draws to a conclusion. The characterisation is tremendous. So to say he has mixed emotions about returning would be an understatement. Anyway, long story short. In The Taking of Annie Thorne Tudor's writing seems more self-assured and honed. Without doubt this brought two King classics to mind – but I can't tell you which because therein lies the land of spoilers. This one is just as good! My only issue with The Taking of Annie Thorne is that it feels a bit too derivative of one of King's books, which actually weakens the story. I enjoyed it so much more. They either had these dark undertones or more of a softer side to them under hard shells. On her return, she looked the same but she wasn't and something in Annie had changed. Having read THE CHALK MAN by the same author I was desperate to read this one as soon as I could.

Her capturing of the UK in the 80s was also sublime. When she came back, she wasn't the same Annie that disappeared. The plot was really engaging as the reader tries to figure out all the reasons the main character has come back to his hometown and to find out what really happened to his sister. But then I sat back and pondered on it all and decided that the whole point of some spooky, the reason it is scary, is that it isn't always explained or indeed explainable.
It's happening again' A shiver down the spine... As I said in my introduction above, I read this book a lot quicker than I was reading other books of a similar length. Great book, easy reading style, and a encapsulating storyline, which reminded me of Stephen King's Pet Semetary. And there's a shock twist which always makes things good. With any mystery or thriller, one of the greatest aspects of this kind of narrative is the characters and their backstory. But he does eventually get people on side and, to be honest, he can do with all the help he can get as what he is trying to sort out comes from a very weird place. His gambling addiction led him into depts. Those who want to make a difference and those who can't get a job anywhere else. This was where he grew up. CJ Tudor is a brilliant storyteller.
Again, there are elements of Stephen King's horror/supernatural, and the kind of ghost stories you'd tell your friends at sleepovers, but told in a way that, apart from a few paragraphs, is actually not as graphic as her previous novel in it's gruesome nature, but more psychological; the fear and terror leaks out of the chapters and fills you with an overwhelming sense of dread. He was on the outskirts, an outcast who preferred comic books and video games to sports and spent large amounts of time with Annie, his younger sister. Facing off with former friends who are none too happy to have him back in town--while avoiding the enemies he's made in the years since--is tougher. I absolutely loved this, it's so different to what I usually read. I would have to say Gloria was my favorite character, if unexpected. Stop reading this review and go and read the book instead. If I haven't already emphasised enough to you, this is a must read and I can see this book winning awards, it is amazing. A sense of unease, a feeling of gathering dread, lurking in the background, creeping around, hiding in the shadows, a serpent ready to strike and the epilogue, well, the epilogue is fucking chilling.

Being able to make a reader feel like this is a real gift. I have not read a horror novel before, unwilling to suspend my disbelief of what I can't touch or logically explain, so I didn't know what to expect. She is definitely well on her way to being a British literary superstar. There is no doubt as to C. J Tudor's skill as a thriller writer; she writes an original and gripping story with flawed and unbalanced characters. I was right to stick with it as once it got going there was no stopping the action and tension as they ramped up and I turned (swiped) the pages ever faster. Another creepy offering from this author. Beth Scattergood teaches art at Arnhill. I was deliberately not taking on anything too ambitious last year, as I experienced a little bit of burnout. It is more a psychological mystery story with a slightly supernatural touch. The above is my own opinion. I just know that when she came back, she wasn't the same.
Joe is a teacher and comes back to teach at his old secondary school. Secondary school feels like how school was, and a small village with a dark secret, feels exactly like that. I should have known, this is an excellently crafted, spooky tale with characters that, within the fear and suspense, made me laugh out loud. For me, the worst bit would have to be that once the story changed course it began to feel like a really bad retelling and I think the original had a lot more involved with it.
This is a compelling novel to read, particularly, I think, by lamplight, late into the night. Have I been too gushing in my praise for a favourite author? Product Information.
